Samson Gym Equipment was a fitness supplier in Rydalmere Sydney NSW that became incredibly popular in the 1970s & 1980s among weightlifters.
The Sydney factory produced its own equipment onsite. Unlike other brands, Samson built their gear with heavy gauge BHP steel which was used in construction work throughout Australia.
Various Samson Weight owners describe them as being the type of weight plate & equipment that will last a lifetime.
A seller advertising his Samson weight collection on Gumtree says his collection was purchased in 1982 after getting inspired watching Arnold through the 80s.
In 1980 Sydney held Mr Olympia, Arnold's last body building competition.
That year a promoter of the comp and good mate of Arnold, Paul Graham had his name placed on these Samson plates.
The earlier plates had the words Samson Weights in the casting. The later plates had the words Samson Gym Equipment in the casting.
These limited edition weights had Paul Graham GYM Equip in the casting.
In 1970 the Australian metric conversion act came into force. Imperial weights to metric weights started changing in 1974 and was completed about 1982. It was during these years weights displayed both types on their plates, imperial and metric.
You can identify the earlier weight plates by where these metrics where placed on the weight.
If it only had LB on the plates they are early 70s or before. When they have both metrics on the plate it was between that metric change over.
The plates with LB on the left and kg on the right were earlier plates. The plates with kg on the left and lb on the right would have been towards the later years.
The Paul Graham edition weights were cast with the LB on the left and the KG on the right. So plates were still using the lb on the left as late as 1980, Arnold's retirement year.
Samson casting with the words Samson Gym Equip was being used in 1982 with the 20LB on the left and 9KG on the right.
The Sydney manufacturer stopped production when they could no longer compete with cheaper imports that were flooding the Australian market.
Mick says in a post on the ausbb.com website that he actually spoke to a worker at Samson not long before they closed up shop.
They said they could import plates already made and painted for less than they could buy the raw materials to cast their own. Instead of going in that direction they ended up closing their doors. Mick states his home gym was created with Samson Weights purchased directly from the Samson Workshop in 1986.
Now your time is best spent watching the secondhand market for Samson to pop up in a random advert and hope you're online, the first to message and in the area at that exact moment.
Samson weights then became one of the most well built weight plates in the country that lifters now seek out on the second-hand market.

Within my first year of starting Cali Paras Fitness I met a lot of customers with ties to the body building industry. So people had stories about their old school gyms and the competitions they had won.
The first guy that walked in to talk to me about old school body building was a man in his 60s who looked to be pushing 6'7. He came to purchase a $20 weight bench I had just finished painting.
When he walked in he saw a pair of 50pound Body Builder weights. He said he hadn't seen old school plates like that in years. As he had a walk through my garage he kept spotting more and more old school brands as he told me about the stories he had training at Venice Bench and using these weights.
Another customer came in had stories about his body building competition days and how his best mate won Mr Queensland.
Over the past year I got to learn more about Powerlifting competitions and old school gyms and training methods these guys would do back in the day. People were coming in to purchase old school plates.
One guy had the same Samson Gym set I was refurbishing. He walked through recognising every machine. Turned out in the 1980s he also welded some machines together so he could train and had the same amount and the same type of Samson weights I was currently cleaning.
He went home with a few old school cable machine accessories. I offered to clean them up and remove the rust for him but he insisted he preferred it the way they were.
I started seeking out brands like Australian Barbell Company, Melbourne Olympic, Don Oliver, Golds Gym and Buffalo.
Until the day I met Kerry who was getting back into training after 20 years. He came in for a pair of adjustable dumbbells. Looking for matching weight plates to his original collection of weights he bought over 20 years ago. We both got distracted talking about weights and bouncing ideas around about collecting.
He left and returned with a thick stack of printed papers where he had done hours of research to help me learn more about what I had in my gym.
That's when the search for Samson Weights begun. He was a huge fan of Samson. He would bring his weights in and I would take photos of the plates in hopes of finding matching weights so he could complete his set.
Being very specific he wanted plates that were exactly the same. The LB and KG had to be the same font, same size and located in the same spot.
This really helped me take more notice of every detail on every plate I'd come across. He was seeking out a match for a large Samson plate and left it with me to match.
Within a few days I found what he was looking for and collected the exact plates and weight with all the right details for him.
Only a few months after this I came across what I'd describe as the greatest Facebook advert of all time.
In March 2024 I found the motherload. A vintage Samson & Champion Barbell Gym set. Put together by an Australian body builder called Tony in the 70s and 80s. His mate had purchased this GYM off him in the mid 1980s when Tony opened a GYM on the Gold Coast called GC International GYM in Ashmore.
But before that, Tony put together this GYM set so he could train for his competitions. Some was custom made to fit inside a shipping container where he set up. A large cable gym with three separate cable attachment anchors and a weight tower having the brand Champion stamped into the first weight block.
This cable gym came with a ton of old school original cable accessories. This machine had a low row machine attachment that had a removable preacher curl pad. Created by Tony to work with his fitness routine and to fit inside his shipping container.
Next to that was a smaller weight tower perfect for sitting in the corner of the container with a leg curl and a leg extension machine fitted to it. This weight tower also had the brand Champion stamped into the first weight block.
I got half inside the backyard while the second half was being collected inside
The weights that came with Tony's GYM were Samson, Standard Barbell Olympic classic steel, unbranded pancake weights with LB being the only metric in the casting. In Olympic he had a full set of classic standard barbell weights which came with two tall storage trees and two Samson Gym Equip plates. They were 50 pounds each!
Then there was the Samson adjustable dumbbell set sitting on a 3 tier steel dumbbell rack holding half a ton of plates.
This leg press was the most solid machine id ever come across. Leg presses are heavy. But this one must have weighed almost double. The construction was incredible & with 3 weight plate loading pegs, large thick frame, spacious padded seat and steel that will last multiple lifetimes this thing was a beast!
It was such a beast it took days to figure out how to relocate it. As I cleaned it up I noticed a stamp in the steel with large letters BHP. A leg press created with Australia's best heavy gauge steel. No wonder the look, feel and design is so good.
It included a T Bar Row Machine, seat calf raise machine, flat bench, incline bench and a solid constructed squat rack. Everything was heavy and created with strong durable materials. Even the two bench presses had heavy steel that was thick and stable. The padding on all the machines are the most durable padding covers I've seen. Some needed a few patch jobs but the comfort was still there and all in good condition.
Barbells, curl bars, triceps bars, ez curl bars, curl bar stand with weight storage, an Olympic barbell with two old school collars weighing 2.5kgs each.
Somehow this gear outlasted the Golden era and made it to 2024.
This took me four months to get it ready for resale. Watch the end results video on YouTube created by my talented brother in-law at Sharrod Visuals and subscribe to my channel here: Somehow I Clean to catch the step by step restoration project documentary.
